2nd Prize, Press 53 Open Awards for “Kingdom Come”

More great news. My short story “Kingdom Come,” a moonshining story I wrote longingly from San Francisco before we moved here to Asheville, has received 2nd prize in the 2009 Open Awards.

Press 53, an indie press out of Winston-Salem that focuses largely on short story collections (and God bless them for that), sponsors the contest. The judge was Rusty Barnes, founder of Night Train Magazine and author of the flash fiction collection Breaking it Down.

The story will be published in the Press 53 Open Award Anthology, due out this fall.

Montana Prize in Fiction: “Rider”

I recently received very exciting news from Cutbank, the literary journal of the University of Montana.  My short story “Rider” has been selected as the winner of the 2009 Montana Prize in Fiction!

The contest was judged Joy Williams, author of Saving Grace, The Changeling, and The Quick and The Dead. I feel truly honored to be selected for this prize by such a fine literary journal.  Here’s the link for more info:

New Story Published at Liars’ League: “Home Guard”

My short story “Home Guard” is up on the Liars’ League site! The story was read by Ben Farrow at the Liars’ League War & Peace event on Tuesday 11 November, 2008 at the Wheatsheaf in London, UK.

Home Guard

Liars’ League is a very cool market for short fiction. Each month they call for submissions under a certain theme. For Veterans’ Day (Remembrance Day in the UK), the theme was War & Peace. The stories selected for publication are then performed by one of the League’s more than 70 registered actors. “Home Guard” was performed by an actor named Ben Farrow, who has appeared in High Heels and Low Lives with Minnie Driver and the UK TV series Keen Eddie and Casualty.

I just wish we could have been there for the experience. Alas, the dollar is weak and London far.

First Story Published: “Black Swan”

My short story “Black Swan” has been published by one of my favorite online literary journals, The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature.

Here’s the link:  Black Swan

Note:  At the beginning of the story, it says Less Firepower, Perhaps? — that’s NOT part of the story.  Rather, there used to be a picture of a broken old wagon wheel there, and Less Firepower, Perhaps was the ALT-text for the image.
