“Plata o Plomo” Published in Crimespree Magazine

CrimeSpree MagazineI just heard – well, it was a couple of weeks ago – that my story “Plata o Plomo” is going to be published in Crimespree Magazine Issue 49.  Don Winslow (Savages) was the cover story of a recent issue, so good company.  “Plata o Plomo” involves aerial drug-smuggling, a favorite subject of mine 🙂

Update:  The story is live.  Here’s the link to Crimespree Issue 49!

“Killafella Creek” Published in Plots with Guns

I just learned that a story I wrote in June, “Killafella Creek,” has been accepted for publication in one of my favorite short crime fiction zines, Plots with Guns.  I wrote this story specifically with them in mind, so I’m really excited.  The story involves gator hunting, airboats, drug-smuggling, and of course there’s a gun or two 😉

I’ll update you guys when it goes live!

UPDATE:  here’s the link for “Killafella Creek.”

“Covered Bridge” Published in Porchlight

My story “Covered Bridge” has been published in the final, “Super Issue” of Porchlight. Check it out here:  Covered Bridge. This story was inspired by this river we went to for a picnic just south of Lake Lure.  There is a covered bridge there – definitely nouveau, not historic.

“River of Fire” Published at storySouth

“River of Fire,” a short story, has been published at storySouth, one of my favorite online publications. Way back in the day (well…2008), a story of mine was almost published there; it would have been my first story published. So anyways, I’ve been trying to get a story in storySouth since then.

Jason Sanford, one of the original editors/creators of storySouth, also started the Million Writers Award, which goes to top short stories published online each year.

In any case, here’s the link for the story:  River of Fire

P.S.

I actually did see, in person, the image from the dock that Hector sees in the story. I think it was my first summer home for college working at the bike shop on Sea Island. It was incredible.

Best American Mystery Stories 2010

I learned today that “Cajun Reeboks,” originally published at Thuglit, has been selected as one of the Other Distinguished Mystery Stories for the 2010 edition of Best American Mystery Stories. I’m pretty sure that means it won’t actually be published, just listed, but hell I’m honored no matter how it gets in there 🙂

Press 53 Spotlight: 3 Stories Published

Hey Everyone,

Order up a copy of Press 53 Spotlight!  It’s got five amazing poets and two killer short story writers, and hell they even published three of my stories too.

  • Whorehouse Piano
  • Kingdom Come
  • Rider

On January 23, Press 53’s Kevin Watson organized and hosted an awesome book launch at the Gallery of the Arts in Winston-Salem.  It was awesome, though my reading of “Kingdom Come” had to be smoothed over by generous helpings of white wine 🙂

“Cajun Reeboks” at Thuglit

New short story “Cajun Reeboks” has been published at Thuglit.com, the badass online showcase for short crime fiction.  I’m truly honored to be published alongside Scott Wolven, whom I regard as a true master of the genre.

“Whorehouse Piano” Just Published at Pindeldyboz!

Hey Everybody,

Pindeldyboz has published one of my most recent stories, “Whorehouse Piano.” You can read it here:

http://www.pindeldyboz.com/tbpiano.htm

A couple people have asked me about the story, especially the title. Well, that phrase “whorehouse piano” was really the seed of the whole story. I came across a band in NOLA who called themselves by the same name, and the phrase just stuck in my head. The story really grew out of that. Part of it is the nugget of meaning, the idea that if you’re playing piano in a whorehouse, nobody is probably listening too much. Kinda funny, kinda sad.

Lucy is one of my favorite characters. I hope she turns up again.

2nd Prize, Press 53 Open Awards for “Kingdom Come”

More great news. My short story “Kingdom Come,” a moonshining story I wrote longingly from San Francisco before we moved here to Asheville, has received 2nd prize in the 2009 Open Awards.

Press 53, an indie press out of Winston-Salem that focuses largely on short story collections (and God bless them for that), sponsors the contest. The judge was Rusty Barnes, founder of Night Train Magazine and author of the flash fiction collection Breaking it Down.

The story will be published in the Press 53 Open Award Anthology, due out this fall.
